Advice

Advice prior to music lessons
When considering music lessons there are some important factors to think about, including necessary checks prior to joining a school of music or seeking a private music tutor. Below are some of the guidelines we recommend that you follow before you decide where to have your lessons.

Always make the necessary checks. (Be safe, not sorry!)

  • Ask the music teacher or school if they have been CRB checked.
  • Are they registered as a educational tutor/facility with the local council our education authority.
  • Is there a suitable liability insurance in place at the time of the lessons.
  • Are health and safety measures in place and is there a nominated health and safety officer.
  • Does the teacher/school have an operating policy in place for you to read.
  • Does the school/studio have current fire equipment certification.
  • Is there access to a First Aid Kit.
  • Do the teaching rooms/studios have access locks and viewing windows.

Ask about the music teacher’s personal experience.

For music teachers, personal experience counts, as well as having the right qualifications for teaching. You need to establish what kind of musical grounding your teacher can offer and what instruments they play and whether they are experienced in a variety of musical styles. If you want to play jazz piano, for example, a music teacher who has played only classical piano may or may not be suitable.

What teaching method does the music teacher use?
Music teachers have different styles of teaching as well as specialising in different styles of music. Find out how the teacher evaluates pupils, what syllabuses they use and how they prepare pupils for exams. Remember, Learning music should be enjoyable, productive and fun!

Has the Teacher/School/Academy won any awards for their teaching.
Awards and accolades are a good way of judging the quality of the music tuition offered. A good music teacher should also have satisfied pupils willing to give a testimony and also recommend their teacher to others.
